Теоретически возможный, но маловероятный случай, когда рост производства в стране приводит к снижению ее экономического потенциала вследствие вывоза всей произведенной продукции за границу. Ситуация может сложиться в стране, специализирующейся на экспорте продукта, спрос на который на внешнем рынке неэластичен по цене (см. Price elasticity of demand), например нефти. Рост производства увеличивает спрос на импорт. Чтобы получить дополнительную иностранную валюту для оплаты этого импорта, экспортный товар приходится продавать по крайне низким ценам, что резко ухудшает условия торговли и сводит на нет все экономические выгоды от роста производства.
